The Lord has Spoken

1 John 5:4-9 says, "For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world-our faith.  And who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?  This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood.  And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is the truth.  For there are three that bear witness, the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.  If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for the witness of God is this, that He has borne witness concerning His Son." We were not able to overcome the world.  But, the One born of God overcame the world.  "As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God"-John 1:12-13.  That's us!  The One God whose Word created and sustains the universe has irrevocably spoken into being this decree:  that "whatever is born of God overcomes the world".  As children brought into the family of God, even "born of God", (His Words not mine) we, by our very nature, overcome the world.  That word "overcome" is used in the present imperfect tense which means that it is not only something that we have already done or that we will do, but it means that we do it continually.  It's just who and what we are, as children of God.

And what is the victory that overcomes the world?  It is our faith in the salvation worked by God through Jesus.  Three bear witness to this salvation:  the Spirit, the water and the blood.  These make the witness of God, and the witness of God is greater than the witness of man.  The Word of God is perpetually the only absolute and final authority.  This world and the powers that work in it that rage against the Lord will never overcome the child of God or His church.
