Heritage

This week saw the most blatant manifestation of evil in my lifetime carry out another murder, an act of war against the rest of the world.  A response was given at the national prayer breakfast.  The most arrogant man I have ever heard of looked down his nose and condescended to charge us to stay off of "our high horse" and remember that Muslim terrorists aren't doing anything that the rest of us haven't been guilty of.  He used the medieval crusades as an example.  (Never mind that the crusades were launched in response to Muslim attacks on Christians and Jews.)  So, what are we supposed to do when such maliciously dishonest, flagrant evil lifts its head in pride from our nation's highest platform and goes unchecked? We are to remember our heritage.  Hebrews 11:5 says:  "By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death; and he was not found because God took him up; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God."  Genesis 6:8 tells us that Enoch's great-grandson, Noah, "found favor in the eyes of the Lord."  Hebrews 11:6 teaches us that the Lord's favor was due to Noah's faith in and reverence for God.  The result was the salvation of Noah and his family.  Several generations later, in Genesis 17:1, the Lord said to Noah's descendant Abraham:  "Walk before  Me, and be blameless."  Galatians 3:6-7 teaches us that "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.  Therefore, know that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham."

Our heritage is to believe and live by the Word of the Lord.  Like those men who walked before the Lord by faith, we should live and walk.  Hebrews 13:7-8 teaches us to "Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.  Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever."  As it was for them, the results of our lives lived by faith will be salvation and life for someone else.  And, our heritage will become the heritage of any generations that may still come as long as the Lord's people remain in the world.
