Before the Lord

In Genesis 18, the Lord told Abraham that He was planning to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because, according to verse 20, "the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah (was) great, and because their sin (was) very grievous."  Within this story of the wrath and judgment of the righteous God, there lies a story of the love of the Lord for His people.  In this story God demonstrates His character to us.  Abraham understood the Lord's character enough to say in verse 25:  "Far be it from Thee to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike." Throughout the Bible, Old and New Testaments, God's character remains constant.  The Lord saved Noah and his family from the flood, Lot and even his daughters and sons-in-law from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, the Israelites who honored the Passover from the plague that killed the firstborn of Egypt, the saints who overcome in Revelation 2:11 from the second death, the perseverance of the saints who kept the Word of God from the hour of testing in Revelation 3:10, and the 144,000 sealed from being harmed during the great tribulation.  Please don't misunderstand, we will absolutely suffer persecution.  But, as Peter wrote in 2 Peter 2:9:  "the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment".

Since we know, as Abraham did, the destruction that is coming for those who have rejected God and the salvation that He provided through His Son, "what sort of people ought (we) to be in holy conduct and godliness?"-2 Peter 3:11

We have to be like Abraham, interceding for those on the brink of destruction.  "Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham was still standing before the Lord."-Genesis 18:22
