Not Knowing any Better

In 1 Samuel 17, a giant Philistine walked out onto a piece of land that the Lord had given to the tribe of Judah.  With his countrymen behind him cheering and laughing, he called out to the army of Israel and dared any man to meet him on the field of battle.  Goliath was bred and raised for killing; he was the perfect warrior.  With a lifetime of the best martial training, a sword and spears heavy enough and with enough strength behind them to render any defensive armor irrelevant, Goliath was the face of death.

In verse 26, young David, visiting the Israelite camp to bring provision to his brothers, asked the soldiers who stood by him:  "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?"  You see, when "wiser heads" were afraid of the giant, David saw him for what he was.  He just didn't know any better.  You probably know the rest of the story.  The close of that day found David standing over the body of the giant, and the Philistines in a panicked retreat.  I imagine there were probably a few messages sent over the next few days, something about a big misunderstanding, and "I hope we weren't out of line with all of that 'I defy the armies of Israel' business."

So, what if we have become some of those “wiser heads?”  What if you find yourself wanting to trust the Lord, but the stakes are too high, or fear is just too difficult to unlearn.  Talk with God about it.  In Isaiah 37, David's great (x11) grandson, Hezekiah faced certain destruction for himself and his people unless he surrendered.  If you read the account, Hezekiah was afraid, but he knew what to do.  Hezekiah took the threatening letters to the temple and spread them out before the Lord, and he prayed.  Always faithful, the almighty God answered.  In verse 23, the Lord addressed the invading king through the prophet Isaiah:  "Whom have you reproached and blasphemed?  Against whom have you raised your voice, and lifted up your eyes on high?  Against the Holy One of Israel."

"Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.  Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.'"-Matthew 18:2-4
