Sustenance

"I will lift up my eyes to the hills-from whence comes my help?" (Psalm 121:1).  The question has been raised and pondered by every soul who has ever inhabited this earth for long enough to encounter difficulty.  The quest for its answer usually involves some serious soul-searching, and the correct answer demands the acceptance of some hard truth.  How can a man persevere, against all odds and against his own nature, to run in such a way that he may obtain the prize?  When faced with persecutions and temptations of all kinds, how can we overcome, as we are commanded to do?

We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony (Revelation 12:11).  "My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth."  (Psalm 121:2).  We can persevere and stand until the end because we are sustained by the one God.  We are not sustained as the world understands sustenance.  We are not sustained by the strength of our wills, our intellects, or even by reliance on each other.  We are sustained because the Lord has spoken.  We can lift up our eyes to the hills, and see that they were created by the Word of God, and by that same Word they still stand.

The Lamb, by whose blood we overcome, is the Lord's final Word in every matter.  Every soul throughout the entire history of humanity will be judged according to the blood of the Lamb.  By the blood of the Lamb, death's legal claim to every last one of us is perfectly satisfied and broken, irrevocably and eternally.  The Lamb, with His own blood, entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption (Hebrews 11:12).  By the blood of the Lamb, I am called "saint" by God Himself.

"The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore."  (Psalm 121:8)
