I Choose my Family

In recent baseball news we learned that 12-year veteran of the game Adam LaRoche retired upon being told not to bring his 14 year-old son into the clubhouse anymore, walking away from an assured $13 million if he would only play for six more months.  His decision has been heavily criticized by a few, and even second-guessed by some of his supporters.  His constant answer is that it was an easy decision. When asked by ABC reporter T.J. Holmes how he walked away from that kind of money, LaRoche's profoundly simple response was:  "I learned a long time ago, no matter how much we have, it's never enough"  (Exclusive). Years from now when some other borderline obsessed baseball history junkie looks back over the career of a man named Adam LaRoche, he'll see one gold glove, respectable numbers in the HR and RBI columns, and no world series rings.  He'll see a career that ended after twelve seasons, with nothing on the stat sheet to explain why.  But, his son will always remember how his Daddy, without any semblance of hesitation, doubt, or regret, rejected fame and fortune because it would have cost them even one day apart.    A powerful precedent has been established for LaRoche men.  He'll be able to look his wife, kids, and his own reflection in the eye and lay his head down at night.  Baseball will go on without Adam LaRoche.  Other players will come and go.  And Adam and Drake LaRoche will be fishing.
