The Darkness

"The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep.  And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters" (Genesis 1:2).  Before the Word of the Lord brought order, meaning, and purpose, there was darkness, emptiness, and chaos.  Darkness enslaves the hearts of men, corrupting our every thought, overshadowing our every hope, hollowing out our every good intention.  But, hovering over the surface of the dark waters, is the Spirit of God. It is easy to become discouraged by the depth of depravity that is readily observable around us in the hearts of those who have given themselves over to the darkness, who rage against the Light.  But the one Lord of the universe, who spoke light into the darkness, still speaks Light into the hearts of the most depraved men.  Psalm 119:130 reads:  "The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple."  And He has made us "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9).
