The Season

Making sure ABSOLUTELY no one is around and then grooving on "Last Christmas" by Wham!  (They wouldn't understand...They couldn't understand...They shouldn't understand...)  Searching the scriptures and the skies wondering who the magi were and what it must have been like to do what they did, and what it would have been like to have them show up to worship the one who had "been born King of the Jews."  Wishing you could have known Joseph, and experienced his humility and obedience.  Trying to imagine being a shepherd about his nightly business, when suddenly a host of angels invites you to witness the birth of the Messiah.  Trying to commit every detail to memory when you see your kids bundled up with nothing but their little smiling faces showing.  Hearing "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" when it's done right, and rejoicing that we have lived to see the answer.  Sitting in the dimly lit sanctuary watching your kids and their friends in the church children's Christmas play.  Burning your burn pile on a cold night, and sitting out next to it, holding one of the kids listening to the fire, enjoying the chance to get to know him better.  Trying to imagine being Mary, coming face to face with Gabriel, processing what he had to say.  Walking in the woods when it's cold and crisp.  Seeing your wife in winter PJ's with a mug in her hands (and that look on her face that says "Mmmmmmm, I have a mug in my hands"), and knowing you've never seen anything more beautiful.  Hearing "O Holy Night" when it's done right, and it really makes you want to fall on your knees.  Watching "Merry Christmas Charlie Brown" with your kids and just drinking it in when Vince Guaraldi plays "Christmastime is Here."

Maybe your list looks a little different, but whatever it looks like, make this Christmas season count.  There is a very real danger each year of allowing ourselves to stress and obsess about all of the things that need to be done (don't get me wrong; they do need to be done).  It's a time of year that's busy and expensive, true enough.  But, don't let those aspects of the season rob you and your family of each other and some of the most precious of memories.  And gentlemen, as Daddies, we have to ability to suck the fun right out of everything.  We also have the ability to make anything awesome.  Make the right decision.

Merry Christmas.  Now get off of whatever device your reading this on and go make it happen.
