I Am

To me, one of God's most awesome and comforting promises is when He says "I am."  Think about that.  In Exodus 3:14 He told Moses "I AM WHO I AM."  Moses was having doubts that he would have any credibility with the Israelites, so God told him to tell them "I AM has sent me to you."  In Mark 14:62 when the high priest asked Jesus whether or not He was the Christ, Jesus answered "I am."  He gave that response knowing fully the meaning that it carried with those who heard it.  In John 8:58 Jesus told the Pharisees who were questioning Him that "before Abraham was born, I am!" A real man (that's right) is timeless.  He is as timeless as the Lord he follows.  He does not love his wife the way that a depraved culture dictates that he should.  Instead, he acknowledges her as the love of his life with his every action and every word.  He does not raise his children in accordance with whatever the prevailing philosophical current happens to be.  Instead, he spends his time with them knowing that there is no substitute for his presence and love in their lives.  He disciplines them with the fierce, tender and gritty love of a Daddy.  And, he does these things and will be sustained in doing these things not because of the illusion of his own rugged determination, but because the Lord has said "I AM."

Do not miss the promise that is in those two words.  The Lord is reminding us that wherever we may be, in any kind of trouble (even the kind that is of our own making) that He is God.  His Word and authority are final.  He sees you, and He knew this moment long before the foundation of the world.  In that knowledge we can be the men that we need to be.

I will not allow my thoughts, actions or words to be determined by an imploding world whose whims and fancies change quicker than we can keep up.  I will follow the one timeless God who makes me timeless.  His Word never has and never will change.  By that same Word He created the very fabric of nature and the laws by which that nature exists.  Today, follow Him with me.
