Fighting Evil

The prophet Jeremiah spoke the Word of God and it got him into trouble.  The Lord told him of the judgement that was coming to Judah because of their rebellion against Him.  They didn't want to hear it so Jeremiah was hated, mocked, called a liar and imprisoned for telling the truth and trying to tell the people what they needed to do so that they would not be destroyed.  Jeremiah 20:9 says "Then I said, 'I will not make mention of Him, nor speak anymore in His name.'  But His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, and I could not."

There was nothing else that Jeremiah could do, but speak the truth that the Lord had put into his heart.  God gave Jeremiah the job of fighting evil in Judah by telling the truth instead of tickling ears.  He learned that once the Lord has spoken, anything less than obedience is unbearable.

It is also important to point out that it seemed as though God's message to Judah through Jeremiah fell on deaf ears.  However, in Daniel 9:2-3 Daniel says "in the first year of [Darius'] reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the Lord, given through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.  Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes."  The work that God did through Jeremiah was not in vain.  Because Jeremiah wrote what the Lord told him to, Daniel knew that the time was right to pray to ask God to restore Jerusalem. Gentlemen, we have to fight evil like Jeremiah did, even if it seems like a lost cause.  We know better.  We are called the light of the world in Matthew 5:14.  Throughout the Bible light is associated with truth.  We all have different callings on our lives from the Lord.  However, all of them accomplish the purpose of fighting evil by shining the light, exposing evil and falsehood for what it is.  The world is starving to death for truth right now.  The Lord has put the light in us.
