There is a Fountain

"There is a Fountain" by William Cowper has been one of my favorite songs for several years now.  I love it so much that it actually upsets me to hear the song done in a way that I feel does not do it justice.  I know that's silly, and please don't get me wrong; it has nothing to do with musical talent.  It has everything to do with understanding the song. "There is a Fountain" is the humble confession of a broken heart that has been healed because it has been with God.  It is the grateful song of a man praising his savior for sealing his life safely out of the reach of the evil that steals, kills and destroys.  In my mind, it is the song of a man who has spent the majority of his life with everyone around him depending on him, and he has never faltered.  The phrase "me time" has never crossed his mind, much less his lips.  His face is worn and hardened by weather and by care.  And, this song is his acknowledgement that everything that he has ever needed is found in Jesus.  It's honest.  There's peace in its truth.  There's a simplicity in its joy.

There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel's veins

And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains

The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day

And there may I though vile as He wash all my sins away

Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood shall never lose its power

Till all the ransomed church of God be saved to sin no more

E'er since by faith I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply

Redeeming love has been my theme and shall be till I die

We can completely trust the one God who went to such great lengths and kept no part of Himself back, sparing nothing, just to be with us.  There's really nothing this world can do to touch that.
