The Beginning of Knowledge

Romans 1:18-20 leaves no room for doubt that every soul knows, at some point in his life, that God exists. So, why do so many reject Him? Why are atheism, secular humanism, gradualism/naturalism, and Darwinism taught as established fact in almost every educational institution?

The root of the problem lies in the nature of man’s heart, as taught by Jesus in John 3:19-20: “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.”

Many of our scientists and philosophers begin the discussion of the origin of the universe by ruling out the Lord and His Word, hardly scientific or open-minded. They claim to objectively seek truth, while disqualifying one possibility without so much as an explanation. If that’s not enough, they go even farther, entertaining such ideas as life being seeded here from parallel universes (I have honestly seen high-profile academics suggest this notion with a straight face). Their eagerness to entertain these thoughts is telling of their true mindset: anything but God. Even Richard Dawkins acknowledges the appearance of intelligent design, as every secular humanist must logically acknowledge a self-sufficient source or energy and matter, at the very least - as long as it isn’t God.

Winston Churchill once said: “Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened.” To acknowledge our own sin and need for the Lord requires humility. For the prideful man, it is unthinkable, but for the man who has been humbled by the inescapable truth of the Word of the Lord, God’s testimony about who He is and who we are, it is liberating like nothing else could be. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7).
