For Good Works

"By grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."  Ephesian 2:8-10 gives us some insight into how we should live once we have trusted the Lord.  Verses 8-9 are very widely known, and rightfully so.  But, verse 10 goes neglected sometimes. Verses 8-9 establish that we are saved because God is good and provides His grace through Jesus.  We accept it by faith, not by earning it.  And, once we have trusted Him, we now live for Him, "for we are His workmanship".

The Christian life does not simply consist of behaving ourselves until our days are over.  Instead, we are intended, even created, to walk in good works which God has prepared beforehand.  Some people, even Christian people, lead lives marked by aimlessness and distance from the Lord.  Instead, let us seek the Lord and know Him because He loves us.  Find out what works He has prepared beforehand for you.  He is waiting to show you what He has for you.

A friend of mine once said, "don't live the saved life; live the crucified life", citing Galatians 2:20.  And, he was right.  Gentlemen, we cannot spend our lives unconcerned about the good works that God has prepared for us.  Instead, live the crucified life, leaving this flesh behind (1 Peter 4:1-2).  If you ever look at great men in the Bible and wonder why we aren't more like them, then understand that they were not happy to just be saved and ride out the storm of this life.  They wanted to know God, so they sought Him.  Trust the Word of the Lord.  Find out first hand from God what good works He has prepared for you (out of everyone in history), and walk in them.
